MONTVALE, Va. (AP) — A Bedford County elementary has been closed for a day because of what school officials say has been an outbreak of norovirus that has left more than one hundred students sick.
Bedford County Public Schools spokesman Ryan Edwards says about 150 students were out sick Thursday, along with some faculty.
Montvale Elementary School Principal Krista Moore said in a letter sent home with students Thursday that the school would be closed Friday to prevent the spread of the highly contagious illness.
Norovirus is commonly associated with large gatherings of people. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and body aches.
Edwards says crews will be cleaning the school building on Friday.
Norovirus has not been a reported problem at any other school in the county.
