BEAVERTON, Ore. -- As part of its mission to be a Future-Ready School district, Beaverton School District in Oregon has added Ergotron's LearnFit®Adjustable Standing Desks to classrooms in its Beaver Acres Elementary School. In addition to the health benefits offered by integrating standing desks into learning environments, educators at Beaver Acres Elementary School are leveraging the mobile LearnFit desks to create inspiring spaces, redirect students' focus and allow them to take control of their learning.
Teachers at Beaver Acres were looking for a way to enhance their classrooms and provide new learning spaces for students. Rather than replacing all traditional school desks with standing desks, the teachers and administrators opted to place 40 LearnFit units throughout third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The adjustable standing desks are helping to develop a student-centric learning environment, where students can freely use the desks to support their work. Teachers also use the desks to redirect highly active students who need to get up and move around while remaining productive, and for inactive students who need to get moving to improve their engagement.
"The LearnFit desks have helped shape the flexible arrangement of my classroom," said Ryan Hoxie, teacher and Future Ready Strategist at Beaverton Acres. "Having the desks in the classroom has enabled students to learn to share and make decisions, while increasing student participation, accountability and ownership."
Research continues to highlight the benefits of standing desks in modern classrooms. By increasing low-level physical activity – such as standing in the classroom – students experience increased blood circulation, leading to greater student attention and engagement. In the 2016-2017 school year, Beaverton School District is focused on creating Future-Ready Schools by integrating a variety of technology tools and strategies into the learning process, as a way to better prepare students for their future.
"At Beaverton, we pride ourselves on providing unique and beneficial learning spaces for our students. With the implementation of the LearnFit desks, students and teachers are able to create the ideal environment for their daily lessons," explained Beaver Acres Elementary School Principal, Stacy Geale. "I've also come to use a LearnFit desk to help keep me visible throughout the school day. I can tell the difference – when I'm out and about and standing, I have more energy."
"Classroom furniture must be able to accommodate students' varied learning styles," said Bob Hill, Ergotron education vertical manager. "We're pleased that both the administrators and educators have implemented the LearnFit desks to facilitate unique classroom design in tandem with positively impacting student health and engagement."
