BC-NY--Water Main Break/144
Schools closed for 2nd day due to water main break in Troy
TROY, N.Y. (AP) — A water main break in the city of Troy continues to have a ripple effect on surrounding communities, creating a water shortage and forcing two school districts to cancel classes for a second day.
Troy officials say the 33-inch, 110-year-old pipe broke Sunday morning, sending up to 10 million gallons of water cascading down streets in a neighborhood on the city's north end. Crews are still fixing the break, and officials say the repairs won't be completed until Friday by the earliest.
Officials in Waterford and Halfmoon, two towns in neighboring Saratoga County that buy water from Troy's system, have declared a state of emergency and are asking residents and businesses to conserve water.
The neighboring Waterford-Halfmoon and Mechanicville school districts have called off classes Wednesday for a second day in a row.
