3 Chicago-area schools to open Monday after Legionella found
ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — Three schools closed in the Chicago suburb of Elgin because of Legionella bacteria found in cooling systems will reopen Monday.
Elgin School District U46 officials say Eastview Middle School, Larkin High School and the Educational Services Center, housing Gifford Street middle and high schools and the Central Schools Program, would remain closed Friday. The (Elgin) Courier-News reports (http://trib.in/1LarRb0) that U46 CEO Tony Sanders says that's so more disinfecting can be done.
The schools and the district offices were evacuated and closed Wednesday after higher-than-normal levels of Legionella bacteria were discovered during air quality testing. Sanders says that since then the three affected cooling towers, along with cooling towers at 16 other district schools that didn't have high bacteria levels, were disinfected and would be disinfected a second time.
