“What is Santa Claus going to bring you on Christmas Eve?”
For many children, this is the big question that they happily answer every December. But in one first grade class in New Jersey’s Manchester Township, this question led to something distressing--and then to something good.
More than three decades ago, a first grade teacher asked her class this very question just before Christmas. One student’s answer, however, was heartbreaking:
“Santa Claus never comes to my house.”
Saddened, the teacher realized that Santa needed some volunteers, so the school’s staff held a drive that continues to this day and now helps an estimated 400 children and their families.
“The goal of the annual Kevin’s Kids Drive is to not only provide toys but include much needed necessities such as clothing and food,” Alex George, the Director of Student and Administrative Services for the Manchester Township School District. “Yes this is a Christmas Drive, but hopefully the necessities provided will help parents in these difficult times throughout the year.”
